USAC Midget racing champion Sondi Eden was excited
to get started in the Racer’s Edge Graphics, Gould Body & Paint,
Dave Stetler Chevrolet-Cadillac, NAPA Auto Parts 410 wing sprint
car.
Opening night at Mansfield , Ohio was rescheduled due to weather. So,
the first race was Saturday night, May 21 at Kalamazoo , Michigan
. The team had some equipment failure that caused Sondi to
have a day full of “ups and downs.” The first
challenge was no brakes on the car. The crew continued working
on the car, and made some significant improvements for the heat
race.
Sondi looked strong in the race as she drove to win the first
preliminary race of the season! Sondi started 14 th in the
feature and now that the car was working she was ready for the
challenge to race to the front. She had a good start as she
passed her way up to 10 th, and Sondi was on the move. As
she was passing for 9 th position though, the fuel pump worked
its way loose, which caused the engine to quit, and Sondi had to
pull it in to the pits.
“Racing is a roller coaster of emotions, and we started
the season off riding it up and down – beginning glitches
with the car that should not have happened, then win a preliminary
race, then be working your way to the front and the fuel pump work
loose and we have a DNF the first race! It was a good and
bad day all in one.” Eden said of her day at the track.
