Alli Owens |
| winning Rookie of the Year title... |
Alexandra Owens (everyone calls her Alli), is a 17 year old racer
who’s been racing stock cars since she was thirteen, often
racing against men more than double her age. This year, Alli has
won races and run up front most every week. When she was 14 years
old, she finished the season sixth in championship points in a
field of 27 cars at a ½ mile dirt track in Florida . At
15 years old, Alli raced mini stocks on a ½ mile asphalt
track and finished third in points, winning the “Rookie of
the Year” title.
Since the start of the 2005 season, Alli has been racing late
models at various asphalt tracks ranging in length from ¼ to ¾ mile.
With just a few races left this season, Alli is doing what most
teenage girls don’t do: She’s in a battle for a late
model stock car championship.
As the season closes, Alli has surpassed all expectations and
has worked her way to 2 nd place in championship points. The rookie
title she had set as a goal is definitely in sight, since she has
at least a 200-point lead over the closest rookie competitor.
| sacrifice things that other teenagers
take for granted... |
This year hasn’t been easy for Alli. With school, a job
and racing, she’s had to sacrifice things that other teenagers
take for granted. “There isn’t much time to hang out
with friends or go to school dances” Alli says, but while
other kids are at the mall or the movies, Alli is working on her
car making sure it’s ready for the next race.
When Alli is not in school, at work or trying to beat the guys
on the race track, she takes the roll of spokesperson for RAD (Race
Against Drugs), lecturing kids about the dangers of drugs, alcohol
and tobacco. She has also attended the Lyn St. James Driver Development
Program and the Lyn St. James Women in the Winners Circle luncheon.
Nothing has been given to this young lady. She has worked very
hard for every point she’s earned, driving against some of
the best late model racers in the area. Alli wouldn’t have
it any other way.
Respect is something else that isn’t easy to come by when
you’re a teenage girl racing against grown men. It’s
not something that comes overnight either, but after racing against
adults for the past four years, Alli has gained that respect.
| willing to make those sacrifices... |
Hopefully Alli’s path will take her to NASCAR someday.
She knows it takes time and a lot of hard work, and she is willing
to make those sacrifices
With only a few more races, Alli is just 50 points out of 1 st
place. A championship is not a sure thing, but considering what
she has accomplished so far, she is a champion in the hearts and
minds of everyone that knows her.
